Online/Distance Learning Opportunities

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF ONLINE/DISTANCE LEARNING?
- With online learning, you can begin your path to a new career today and be a part of the exciting new future in education.
- Online learning provides flexibility to learn from anywhere at your own pace and at convenient times.
- Success is evident when the teacher and student interact with the field of study, the teacher grades the work and communicates on the progress the student is making.
- Hillsborough County Adult School students who need credit or credit recovery to complete graduation requirements or wish to obtain a GED can enroll in online/distance learning courses.
- Students will access and complete course assignments 24/7 via the Internet from home, school, or any Internet-accessible computer.
- Online instructors will work individually with students to provide tutoring and instruction to complete the course.

GED Online
Online GED instruction includes language arts writing, language arts reading, mathematics, science and social studies. After registration, students attend an orientation to meet the online instructor and receive a password for login. Students set their own pace for learning and study as their schedules allow. When ready to take the GED test, students schedule a convenient date at a GED test location.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR GED ONLINE CLASSES?
- Online adult students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in the adult Online GED Program.
- Online classes will provide 2 lab/class hours per week for testing and individualize tutoring/instruction. Online students must spend approximately 6 hours per week working on the course.
- Online GED students must submit at least three preferably five completed assignments per week.
- Students 16 or 17 years old may enroll in the Online Under-Age GED Program if they wish to take the GED Test prior to their 18th birthday. Online Under-Age GED students must meet the same entry, enrollment, and exit requirements as traditional, on-campus under-age students.
- Underage GED students will attend a minimum of 3 hours per week in a lab setting.
- Online Underage students must spend an additional 22 hours per week working on the course and submit 10 completed assignments per week.
- Online GED Adult and Underage students must take the TABE test before starting class.
- All Online GED students must score 6.0 on the TABE Level D Reading Subtest and 9.0 in a minimum of one of the three subtests (Math, Reading, or Language). Exceptions must be approved by site administrator with the director’s permission
ONLINE ADULT HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES
Hillsborough County Adult Education uses Aventa Learning for Online/Distance Learning Credit Classes. Site administrators will direct student enroll procedures in each individual situation. Review the following information for eligibility requirements.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR CREDIT ONLINE CLASSES?
- Co-enrolled & credit students must complete the student information form (including a current phone number and email address) and provide a copy of a picture ID at the school site and also obtain a Letter of Authorization from their high school (co-enrolled students only).
- Online students must demonstrate a likelihood of success. Site administrators have the discretion for the 2012-2013 school year to evaluate the likelihood of success a student will have in the Online Program and refer the student accordingly.
- Online students must have regular daily access to the Internet and a working email address.
- Co-enrolled credit students are only allowed to take two core courses a year. Each course could be .5 credits or 1 full credit.
- It will be the responsibility of the authorizing high school administrator to assure the students do not exceed the two course limit. Permission forms will be used for record keeping.
